I started this painting during an art demo, where I laid down the base colors and shared how I use reference images. Using a GoPro through a dome, I take videos of underwater movement, then select my favourite frames to capture the action. I love painting those dynamic, “in-motion” moments.
During the demo, I also explained the importance of volume and contrast in painting — something I’ve learned over the years. Without understanding volume, paintings can look flat. By creating strong contrasts, making some areas darker and others very light, I can highlight key parts and give the work a sense of depth and almost a 3D effect.
The meaning behind this piece reflects a personal experience: I’ve been through difficult times that I never shared with anyone. Like the painting, there’s a hidden storm beneath the surface, while on top, everything appears calm and still.
